Proximity policing returns in Brazil

This article reports that police in Rio de Janeiro plan to re-emphasize proximity policing (“Friendly Battalions”) in place of the highly militarized favela pacification units that were relied on heavily in the period leading to the 2014 World Cup. Recent elections and police command assignments suggest that this is a substantive shift, not just public relations.
