State of terror in Veracruz

This report from Crisis International details a decade of violence and corruption in Mexico’s 3rd largest state of Veracruz, including 2,750 people who have disappeared and 17 murders of journalists. One police commander who refused bribes “was stripped of his semi-automatic rifle and bulletproof vest, and told he would be redeployed to one of the state’s most violent areas. He resigned, and the convoy he was supposed to travel in the next day was ambushed, leading to the death of three of his peers.” He estimates that, out of his police academy cohort of 40, 10 are alive today.
